  • Hi there, DJ!

I have a question for you. Does it matter what kind of controller you are using? What if you prefer a midi keyboard over a dj controller? Does it make you look ridiculous or funny somehow? I would love to hear what you have to say!

PS- I myself use a keyboard and was just checkin’ to see that i’m not alone…:)

    Whatever works for you.
I have seen controllerists DJ with 2 midi fighters and an M-Audio Ozone Keyboard and it was outstanding performance.
So I say whatever floats your boat.

I for one would miss the mixer section and the jogwheels, but many good Djs have used a Novation Twitch with no cogwheels… it totally depends on your workflow and if you make it work, it sounds good and I have fun while you are DJing I do not care what you are using.

Well scratching you need to move a platter or jogwheel to make the scratching sound live like. Of course you can always pre-record scratching sounds and them play them through a sampler via midi keystrokes, but it has nothing to do with scratching (aka the art of altering sounds via movement of a fader for cutting and a platter/jogwheel for scratch speed).

Of course you can map all the mixer functions to a midi keyboard, but for my workflow I need the layout of the DJ controller. Surely if you get used to it a keyboard with knobs and faders can do almost the same. Of course many DJ controllers have some standalone functions and filters that you obviously would miss out on.

I used to DJ with an M-Audio Midi keyboard! It’s all good fun 🙂

Here is a video on doing just that. I think the guys were referring too.

My main systemhas no jogs now and scratching is about the only thing I miss them for. I would love NI to make a modular jog wheel with a select button, pitch adjustment slider and nudge buttons and I’m there. Don’t want much do I 🙂

Still DJ Cheeku good luck with the keyboard option. It certainly can be done and will take some getting used to. Then it is like any new system you just have to set it up, tweak it a bit to fit your own workflow.

I can see one major “non-technical” problem with this setup. If you are ever asked to play in a place where bringing your own gear is not an option, then you will have to use the in-house system, most likely a club mixer with CDJ-like players. And if you are used to a keyboard and not to things like pitchfaders, jogwheels and the general layout of CDJs, this can be quite a challenge.

Won’t be a problem if you never play out, but I personally would not go for such a highly personalized way of controlling my software which, in essence, forces me to only play with my own gear.

    Greetinx.

Well you could always lend him some CDJ’s to practice on DJ Vintage. 🙂

Yeah … only have 6 of them laying around right now … 😛

ok well I’ll take 2, DJ Cheeku can take the other two and you still have two to play with. Deal ? 🙂

Sure … you want the Denon S1200s or my trusty, if slightly dated backups, the American Audio CDI-500s?

The S1200s are too small, so I’d go with the CDI-500s
